From raw materials to recycling, Bergad’s environmental policy strategy offers advantages to our workers, customers, consumers, and the environment in general. It provides workers with environmentally-appropriate working conditions, which, among other benefits, minimizes and eliminates the handling of hazardous materials, while for our customers and end-users of products made with Bergad foam, it allows for no harmful or harsh-smelling outgassing. Bergad is always striving to use new methods and technology in order to reduce waste and cost while improving efficiency. Instead of filling up space in a landfill, our excess foam from production and fabrication is recycled into new materials like carpet cushioning, pet bedding, and even new raw materials.

None of the foams produced here at Bergad are manufactured with the use of TDI (toluene diisocyanate), eliminating the chance for carcinogenic TDA formation. 95% of our foams are manufactured using reactive amine catalysts, which reduces the chemical smell of the foam as well as the impact on the environment. We are now also phasing in non-fugitive (non-VOC) or extremely low-VOC silicone surfactants and tin catalysts to many of our foams, as well as working to develop foams with increasing amounts of sustainably-sourced polyols. Some foam manufacturers claim to have “green” products by changing 1% of their foam formulation to polyols sourced from corn, soy, etc; while this is a significant reduction in the use of petroleum, we do not believe that this constitutes “green” technology. Our dedication to developing foams with high amounts of sustainably-sourced polyols and our commitment to using fully reactive, non-fugitive, and/or low-VOC chemicals, coupled with the data from the thermodynamic analyses of all of the other additives that we use in our foams, indicates that our formulations allow us to produce some of the most, if not the most environmentally friendly, lowest-VOC, safest, and “greenest” foams for use in any market. Another major advantage our foams have over foams produced in China (or other manufacturers in the US and around the world) is that our foams pass the strict fire standards set forth in California Technical Bulletin 117, 14 CFR (FAR) 25.853(a) (1) i & ii when tested per Appendix F Part 1(b), UL94 HF2, and FMVSS 302 without the use of any potentially hazardous materials such as melamine, or bromine-, chlorine-, other halogen-, or antimony-containing chemicals. All of the foams we produce are RoHS compliant, which means that they contain no detectable levels of cadmium, lead, bromine, mercury, or chromium (http://www.rohs.gov.uk/). None of our foams contain any of these materials whatsoever.

95% of the viscoelastic foam that we produce releases no detectable amount of any substance into the atmosphere or surrounding bodies, as per evolved gas analysis according to ASTM E 2105.

We have compiled a Substances of Very High Concern report that certifies the non-usage of specific dangerous chemicals in any of our foams. While not specifically listed, none of our foams contain formaldehyde or other preservatives of any kind.
